Mateer’s late score lifts OU past Tennessee
Oklahoma secured a crucial 33-27 road victory over Tennessee on Saturday, largely thanks to a dominant defensive effort and quarterback John Mateer's late-game heroics. Mateer threw for 159 yards, ran for 80, and scored the clinching one-yard touchdown with less than two minutes remaining.
The Sooners (7-2, 3-2 SEC) capitalized on three Volunteers turnovers to score 13 points, including a 71-yard fumble return touchdown by R Thomas Mason and two field goals from Tate Sandell (part of his four FGs, including two from 55 yards).
Despite being outgained 255-99 in the first half, the Vols’ mistakes allowed Oklahoma to take a 16-10 lead into the break. As OU coach Brent Venables noted, "Our guys matched [Tennessee’s] physicality, and then some. The pile constantly went in our direction."
Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar threw for 393 yards and two touchdowns, both to Braylon Staley (five catches, 75 yards). However, Oklahoma's defense pressured Aguilar all night, sacking him four times and limiting the Vols to just 63 rushing yards. Tennessee coach Josh Heupel acknowledged the costly errors: "We didn’t handle [Oklahoma’s defense] well enough... We gave them 16 points in the first half."
After Mike Matthews cut the deficit to 26-24 with a 15-yard TD catch late in the fourth, the Sooners recovered the ensuing onside kick. Xavier Robinson then broke a 43-yard run before intentionally going down at the 1-yard line, setting up Mateer's game-sealing score.

Bulldogs keep Hogs' losing streak going
By DAVID SEELEY
The Sequoyah County Times
FAYETTEVILLE, Arkansas -- If ever there was a snake-bit team, it's the Arkansas Razorbacks.
After seeing four fourth-quarter turnovers doom the Razorbacks in a football loss to Auburn the previous week, the Hogs let a 28-14 third-quarter lead evaporate as Mississippi State scored with 43 seconds left to play to snatch a 38-35 come-from-behind Southeastern Conference victory from the jaws of defeat on Saturday at Frank Broyles Field at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium.
The comeback win snapped a four-game SEC losing streak for the Bulldogs (5-4 overall, 1-4 in SEC play) as they won for the first time in conference play this season.
The Razorbacks (2-7, 0-5) lost for the seventh straight game and are likely not going bowling unless they win out and get five wins and hope that there are not enough bowl-eligible teams wi8th six wins or more to get a bowl berth.
Trailing 35-21 with 13:43 remaining to play, thanks to a 33-yard pass from Blake Shapen to Anthony Evans III as well as a roughing the passer penalty and a pass interference penalty in the end zone on Arkansas, the Bulldogs cut their deficit in half as running back Davon Booth scored on a 2-yard touchdown run. Kyle Ferrie's extra point cut the Arkansas lead to 35-28 with 10:16 remaining in the game.
Aided by a personal foul penalty on Arkansas, Mississippi State went from its own 29-yard line and drove as deep as the Hogs' 17-yard line before moving backward. The Bulldogs were going to settle for a 51-yard field goal by Ferrie, which went wide left. However, thanks to a running into the penalty on the Razorbacks, Ferrie got another chance and connected on a 46-yard field goal to cut the MSU deficit to 35-31 with 5:07 left to play.
After the 'Dogs stopped the Hogs on the ensuing drive, the Bulldogs got the ball at their own 31-yard line with 3:08 remaining in the game.
Thanks to two fourth-down conversions and a 32-yard pass from Shapen to wide receiver Brenen Thompson, the Bulldogs drove 69 yards in 10 plays as Shapen connected with Evans III on an 18-yard TD pass with 43 seconds left in the game. Ferrie hit the PAT to give the 'Dogs a 38-35 lead, their first advantage since a 14-13 lead with 13:43 left in the third quarter.
The Razorbacks were stopped on fourth down inside the Arkansas 3-yard line as quarterback Taylen Green was called for intentional grounding as he was pressured by MSU linebacker Neavaeh Sanders, who got credited with a sack.
The 'Dogs took over, doing one victory-formation snap to end the game.
The Razorbacks, thanks to a 29-yard opening kickoff return by Rodney Hill, started the game's opening possession at their own 31-yard line.
The Hogs drove as deep as the Mississippi State 43-yard line, but they ended up having to punt with 11:39 left in the first quarter.
The Bulldogs took over on their own 20-yard line off the touchback. Thanks to a pass interference penalty on the Hogs, the 'Dogs went 80 yards in 12 plays as on third and goal from the Arkansas 8, Shapen hit Booth on a swing pass. After avoiding one Arkansas defender, Booth went untouched into the end zone for the touchdown with 7:06 remaining in the period. Ferrie's extra point put Mississippi State ahead 7-0, which was the score entering the second quarter.
The Razorbacks tied the game on the third play of the second period as Green hit a wide-open tight end Rohan Jones in the right flat, and Jones waltzed into the end zone from three yards out. Scott Starzyk's extra point knotted the game at 7-all with 13:54 left before halftime.
The score was set up by Green's 23-yard pass to Raylen Sharpe to put the ball down at the MSU 1-yard line.
After stopping the Bulldogs on their ensuing possession, the Hogs got the ball at their 20-yard line off the touchback with 12:32 remaining in the first half.
The Razorbacks, thanks to a 25-yard pass from Green to Kam Shanks to get them down to the Mississippi State 31, got as deep as the MSU 24. However, the drive stalled, and the Hogs had to settle for a 42-yard field goal by Starzyk to put Arkansas ahead for the first time in the game at 10-7 with 7:32 left before halftime.
The 'Dogs tried to rally as they went from their own 25-yard line off the touchback and drove as deep as the Arkansas 34 before the drive stalled and were forced to punt. Mississippi State punter Nathan Tiyce pinned the Hogs at their own 3-yard line with 3:57 remaining in the first half.
Thanks to a fourth-down conversion and a 38-yard pass from Green to Sharpe to get the Hogs down to the MSU 12-yard line, the Razorbacks were able to get points. With a second left in the first half, Starzyk hit his second field goal, a 30-yarder, to increase the Arkansas advantage to 13-7 at halftime.
The Bulldogs went 75 yards in four plays on the first drive of the second half. Thanks to a roughing the passer penalty on Arkansas, which injured Shapen, to aid the drive, MSU bask-up QB Kamario Taylor hit Evans III on a 45-yard touchdown pass to tie the game. Ferrie's extra point, which initially hit then upright but got another chance as the Hogs were offsides, regained the lead for the 'Dogs at 14-13 with 13:43 left in the third quarter.
The Razorbacks went 75 yards in nine plays as, aided by Green's 18-yard run and a holding penalty on MSU, Green went up the middle for an 8-yard touchdown run. Starzyk's extra point regained the lead for Arkansas at 20-14 with 9:23 remaining in the period.
The Bulldogs tried to respond as they drove from their own 25-yard line to as deep as the Arkansas 38, only to be stopped on fourth down with 6:49 left in the period.
The Hogs took advantage of the gift, needing only two plays to find paydirt.
After Sharpe took a reverse 41 yards to the MSU 20 yard-line, Mike Washington Jr. took it up the middle 20 yards for the touchdown.
The Razorbacks went for two points, and got them, as Green hit Jones with a shuffle pass up the middle for the conversion and a 28-14 lead with 6:18 remaining in the quarter.
After the conversion, Arkansas was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct, forcing the ensuing kickoff to come from the Arkansas 20-yard line.
Booth returned the kickoff 17 yards, where the Hogs were penalized for a late hit to move the ball to the Arkansas 45-yard line.
Two plays later, Arkansas safety Larry Worth III was penalized for targeting and ejected from the game.
All of that helped the 'Dogs take the ball into the end zone as Taylor scrambled 20 yards for the touchdown with 4:49 left in the quarter. Ferrie's PAT cut the MSU deficit to 28-21, which was the score after three quarters.
On MSU's next drive, Shapen returned, but he had his deflected pass intercepted by Arkansas nickleback Jordan Young, who returned the pick 11 yards to the MSU 41-yard line with 2:20 remaining in the third period.
Surviving a turnover resulting in a touchback for the Bulldogs that was nullified due to a MSU penalty, the Razorbacks' drive, which continued into the fourth quarter, ended up going 41 yards in seven plays as Braylen Russell took it in from two yards out. Starzyk's extra point increased the Arkansas lead to 35-21 with 13:43 left to play in the game.
Thanks to a 33-yard pass from Shapen to Evans III as well as a roughing the passer penalty and a pass interference penalty in the end zone on Arkansas, the Bulldogs cut their deficit in half as Booth scored on a 2-yard TD run. Ferrie's PAT cut the Arkansas lead to 35-28 with 10:16 remaining in the game.
On its next possession, aided by a personal foul penalty on Arkansas, Mississippi State went from its own 29-yard line and drove as deep as the Hogs' 17-yard line before moving backward.
Penalties killed Arkansas as the Razorbacks were called for 18 penalties for 193 yards, with a lot of them in Arkansas interim coach Bobby Petrino's opinion were questionable.
After a bye week next week, the Razorbacks will look to win "The Battle of the Boot" against the Louisiana State University Nov. 15 at LSU.
