Week 9 football roundup for LeFlore County
Week 9 football roundup featured Talihina clinching another district championship, Pocola outlasted Panama and Poteau’s streak of playoff appearances is in serious trouble after an upset loss at Hilldale.
Also, Kiefer dashed Heavener’s hopes of a home playoff game with a blowout win, Spiro is still looking for a win and Arkoma couldn’t handle Webbers Falls in Friday’s games.
Talihina got revenge for its only regular season loss in the last two seasons as the top-ranked Golden Tigers won at Regent Prep, 40-13. The Golden Tigers have a one-game remaining in district play with a head-to-head win over second-place Allen. Talihina is now 9-0 overall, 6-0 in district play while Regent Prep is 3-5 and 2-4.
Pocola basically clinched second spot in its district and a home playoff game with the 34-8 win over Panama in a game that was close until the second half. The Indians are now 7-2 and 5-1. Panama is 6-3 and 4-2.
The Indians visit Haskell next week while Panama travels to Hartshorne. Panama is now tied with Haskell for third place, but the Razorbacks won the head-to-head matchup. So, Panama should finish third unless Haskell upsets Pocola next week, regardless of the Razorbacks’ matchup with Hartshorne.
Poteau has made the playoffs every year since 2013. But the 36-22 loss at Hilldale threw a major dash into the Pirates’ playoff hopes. Poteau entered the game in a four-way tie with Ada, Broken Bow and Sallisaw. While all three of the district leaders won, Poteau is now a game ahead of Hilldale for the fourth playoff spot with the Pirates hosting Broken Bow next week and Hilldale playing McLain.
The Pirates, now 7-2 and 4-2, were in the same situation last year before winning at Broken Bow in the season finale to keep their playoff run alive. But if Poteau loses and Hilldale wins, those two teams will be tied for fourth place and the Hornets will advance due to the win over Poteau.
Heavener had a shot of finishing second in the district and getting a home playoff game for the first time since the early 2000’s, but Kiefer slammed that door quickly, rushing out to a 46-0 lead at the half en route to a 54-14 victory at Heavener. Kiefer clinches second place in the district with a 7-2 record overall and 5-1 in district play.
Heavener (3-6 and 3-3), is in a tie for third place with Bethel and Prague. The Wolves visit Bethel next week while Prague hosts Hugo. If Heavener loses at Bethel, the Wolves could still make the playoffs if Hugo wins at Prague and Heavener has the advantage in district points.
Spiro’s struggles continued in a 40-0 loss to Henryetta. The Bulldogs are 0-9 and 0-6 while Henryetta is 5-4 and 3-3. The Bulldogs close out the regular season next week at home against Antlers.
Arkoma has already clinched a playoff spot before losing to Webbers Falls, which knocked the Mustangs down to fourth place in the district with the 52-27 loss to the Warriors. Arkoma is 3-6 and 1-2 in district play. Webbers Falls is 5-4 and 2-2. Arkoma visits Copan next week while Webbers Falls had a district game with Wesleyan that was forfeited.
